Education
Most children with special educational needs can go to a local mainstream school with the right support.
When your child first goes to school, you can choose up to four mainstream schools that you would prefer your child to go to. This also happens when they move schools because of their age e.g. to secondary school. You are not guaranteed your first choice so it is important to use all your four options and not miss the application deadline.
The Equality Act 2010 ensures that all schools should give appropriate thought to the provision that can be made to support a child/young person with special educational needs. There is a school admissions code that all schools and admissions authorities must follow.
Children who continue to face challenges in their learning, despite receiving high-quality teaching and use of differentiation, may need additional strategies, or different provision, in order to meet their needs. This is known as SEN Support.
SEN support is a four-part cycle - assess, plan, do, review. Through this cycle, actions are reviewed and support adjusted to ensure the desired outcomes are achieved.
Assess
A thorough and holistic assessment is essential to ensure that the ‘needs’ are accurately identified to ensure that the most appropriate and effective interventions are implemented. Assessments may be carried out by school staff (e.g. reading, spelling, emotional wellbeing assessments such as Boxall Profile and Early Help assessment ) or may involve external agencies e.g. Educational Psychologists, Learning Support Services, Sensory Inclusion Service etc
Plan
Once the key barriers to learning have been identified it is possible to plan the most effective interventions. The teacher and SENCo should agree, in consultation with the parent and the pupil, the adjustments, interventions and support to be put in place. All teachers and support staff who work with the pupil should be aware of their needs, the outcomes sought, the support provided and any teaching strategies or approaches that are required.
Do
The class or subject teacher should remain responsible for working with the child on a daily basis. Where the interventions involve group or 1:1 teaching away from the main class, the class or subject teacher should still retain responsibility for the pupil. Teachers should work closely with any TA’s to plan and assess the impact of support and interventions and consider how they can be linked to classroom teaching. The SENCo should support the class teacher and provide advice on interventions, strategies and the effective implementation of support.
Review
The impact and quality of the support and interventions should be evaluated, along with the views of the parent and child. The class teacher, working with the SENCo, should revise the support in light of the pupil’s progress and development.
Here you can find a assess plan do review template.
SEN Funding -Mainstream schools (LA-maintained schools and academies)
Funding for pupils’ education is delivered using a 'place-plus' approach. Place-plus means that schools receive funds based on their pupil numbers (place) and additional funds based on other factors, such as deprivation and low prior attainment (plus).
Most children with special educational needs can go to a local mainstream school with the right support. If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC plan), there will be ongoing reviews of their support and progress. In some circumstances this may include consideration of a specialist provision placement. Any decision about a change of school place would need the agreement of all professionals involved and you as the parent/carer.
