Hobbies and Interests
I am a medical historian and author. I deliver presentations on the history of healthcare, medicine, surgery and diseases throughout history (from prehistory age to modern day) for a variety of audiences, groups and societies. Presentations are accompanied by an appropriate display of objects. I specialise in the history of health and disease of the Black Country.
My published books include: "Ouch! The history of arrow wound treatment", "The Diggum Uppers: Body Snatching and Grave Robbing in the West Midlands", "Quacks and Cures: Quack Doctors and Folk Healing of the Black Country" . "Disease and Illness in the Black Country. A History : Volume 1: Medieval to Early Modern", "Buboes, Boils and Bellyaches: Essays on Health and Disease in the Black Country"; "Nothing reigns here but Want and Disease, Death and Desolation": The Black Country during the 1832 Cholera Pandemic", and "The Strangling Angel: Diphtheria in the Black Country".
I have also appeared in a number of documentaries,: "Mystic Britain" (Smithsonian Channel) and "The Great Plague" and "The Black Death"(Channel 5); "Ancient Autopsy" (More4) with Prof Susannah Lipscomb, and a series for the History Hit channel with Matt lewis and Dan Snow.
I have been a public speaker for over 20 years, and deliver a range talks and presentations on the history of medicine, surgery and disease, frequently accompanied by a range of artifacts. I also specialise in the medical history of the Black Country. I present to a range of audiences from social societies to specialist groups.
