The Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Support Project has been operating for over the last 30 years, and the organisation continues to deliver services to the service users as well as increasing awareness amongst professionals and the public. The organisation is well established in three areas within the West Midlands (Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley) ensuring that through the delivery of the screening programme that good outcomes exist for parents, babies and those living with the conditions.
Community Haemoglobinopathy services for children, young people and families
We work closely with the NHS to offer the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme. All unusual results via the antenatal and neonatal screening programmes are referred to the project to be offered a counselling appointment.
As part of our commitment to support service users and families in the management of their condition, we offer a range of services.
Care Plans and Assessments
Visits to clients in hospital, home or the community
Referrals to other agencies
Supporting parents to become experts in managing their child’s care and supporting children and young people to become experts in managing their own care
Supporting the planning and coordination of care for children and young people
Supporting parents in their caring role
Supporting parents and families to access other services to assist in addressing the wider determinants of health
Liaison and networking with other haemoglobinopathy service providers, primary and community healthcare services and others
Training, Education and support for other professionals in health, social care, education and other relevant services
Public Information, Education and Awareness Raising
We offer training sessions and educational workshops to raise awareness of sickle cell and thalassaemia within communities, schools, and healthcare settings. Our aim is to improve understanding of these conditions, and promote better care through
