There is much that Kate can tell you about this fantastic project which has now to develop a 3-5 plan to make the village and school totally self sufficient.
This is a truly remarkable project, with some lovely stories told by a dedicated and talented speaker
The charity 'Planting for Hope Uganda' was formed when a retired teacher from England, Kate Oakley, met a young Ugandan university graduate, Apollo Saku. Together they found a remote bush village, Kititi, in the heart of Uganda where the people, including many children, were in desperate need of help. They were dying of malaria, malnutrition, aids etc., with very few ways to earn a living and most of the children were unable to go to school due to lack of money. Within the last 15 years these two amazing individuals, with the help of the villagers themselves and many willing volunteers have transformed the village and the surrounding area. The whole emphasis has been centered around self sufficiency. The school, which they purchased, now has 600 pupils, with virtually all the village children attending, whether they can afford to pay or not. The exam results have made them top of the Kyanamukaaka District of 38 schools for the last 5 years and was recently the second best school in the District of Masaka, a much larger district, including exclusive private schools.
One of the first actions was to form a women's co-operative in the village, as most of the adults left were women with no way of earning any money. They are now totally self governing and self sufficient. Land has been acquired to grow crops for eating and for commercial use. There is a medical clinic for all and an outreach programme for elderly and vulnerable residents.
