Children and young people in schools have access to a School Nurse who offers a confidential service.
The School Nursing Team is made up of:
Specialist Community Public Health Nurses
Registered Nurses/Registered Children’s Nurse
School Nurse Support Workers
Project Support Worker
Administrators
The Health Visiting Service transfers the care of the child when they start school.
Our teams are based within localities and all local authority schools have a named School Nurse. We offer children, young people, parents and carers a confidential service. This means the School Nurse will not tell anyone else what has been discussed unless it is with the young person's consent. However, we will have to share information without consent if we feel a child or young person has been or is at risk of being harmed in any way. This will be discussed with them before it happens wherever possible.
School Nurses offer support to children, young people, their families and teachers:
Promoting healthy lifestyles
Provide health assessments
The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is completed in Reception and Year 6
Support schools to develop medical heath care plans for children and young people with long term health conditions
Support for children and young people with their emotional health and wellbeing by using the iThrive model of "thriving, signposting and support”
Primary school, secondary school drop-in’s
Working with schools, children and young people to address smoking, alcohol or drugs
Support to parents and carers providing advice on specific issues such as bedwetting, healthy eating and much more
Protection of vulnerable children to improve their health outcomes
Signposting and referrals to other services
Training for school staff on use of emergency Epipens
Health promotion in primary and secondary schools
Provide a confidential ChatHealth ParentLine messaging service, managed by School Nurses
Provide a confidential ChatHealth messaging service for young people, managed by School Nurses.
