Universal Credit
Universal Credit (UC) is a benefit for people living on a low income, or who are out of work. UC can be claimed by people who are in employment or self-employed; by people who are looking for work; or by people who are unable to work because of illness, disability, or caring responsibilities.
Eventually, UC will replace:
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA);
- Income Support (IS);
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA);
- Housing Benefit (HB); and
- Tax Credits (TC).
These benefits are called ‘legacy benefits’.
Universal Credit is paid as a single monthly payment which will include costs for housing and childcare.
Anyone of working age, needing to make a new claim for benefit, must now claim Universal Credit.
Disability and carers benefits (such as Personal Independence Payment, and Carers Allowance) can still be claimed in the usual way.
In order to qualify for UC, the basic conditions are that claimants must:
- Usually be at least 18 years old (16/17-year olds can claim in special cases such as having a child; having a limited capability for work; having caring responsibilities, or being without parental support).
- Be under pension age (unless they have a working age partner).
- Not be receiving education (there are some exceptions so please seek advice).
- Must accept a claimant commitment.
- Must not have more than £16,000 in capital
