Asthma

This clinic runs weekly with the consultant and asthma clinical nurse specialist. Investigations may include lung function tests.

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways- the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs.

1 in 11 children in the UK have Asthma.

A child/young person with asthma has ‘sensitive’ airways ready to react to things that can irritate them- this includes pollen, pets, cold weather and mould.

When the airways react they become narrower, even more irritated and can create more mucus.

This causes the child/young person to have asthma symptoms and means they find it hard to breathe.

The care team will help with the things needed to manage your child's type 1 diabetes, such as injecting insulin, testing blood glucose levels, and diet.

They can give advice on school or nursery, and talk to your child's teachers and carers.

You'll have appointments with the care team every 1 or 2 weeks at first. When you're starting to manage OK, these will be every 3 months.

Paediatrics can be divided into 4 main areas:

  • general paediatrics - a hospital role covering children from birth to the age of 16. Most paediatricians have this generalist role
  • neonatology - this role specialises in looking after newly born babies. It is usually based in an intensive care unit looking after premature babies or those with problems at birth
  • community paediatrics - these doctors are based in the community and look after children with developmental, social or behavioural problems and those with a physical disability
  • paediatric cardiology - this is a small area which is a specialty in its own right. These doctors diagnose and treat children with cardiac (heart) conditions
