Safeguarding Adults - Dudley MBC

Dudley MBC Services

 What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is about us working together to make sure that children, young people and adults are safe and protected, free from harm, abuse or neglect. Adults should also be free to make their own choices.

Safeguarding means protecting a person's right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. It is about making people aware of their rights, protecting them and preventing or stopping abuse. We need to encourage people to report any suspected adult abuse, whether it happened recently, or not

What is abuse?

Abuse is not normal and never okay. Being abused means a person is being deliberately hurt by someone else.

It can vary from the seemingly trivial act of not treating someone with dignity and respect to extreme punishment, cruelty or torture.

The commonly recognised forms of abuse are physical, sexual, financial, psychological, discriminatory, neglect or acts of omission, organisational, self-neglect, domestic abuse and modern slavery.

About vulnerable adults

When a concern of abuse or neglect is reported, the Dudley Safeguarding People's Partnership Board has a legal duty under The Care Act 2014 to ensure that enquiries are made where the adult concerned:

  • Has needs for care and support (whether or not the council is meeting these needs) and;
  • Is experiencing, or is at risk of abuse and neglect and
  • As a result of those care and support needs is unable to protect themselves from either the risk of, or the experience of abuse and neglect.

If the adult does not meet these criteria, then the Board will ensure that signposting is provided to supportive services which can help the person concerned
