Riverside House is an ambitious project, a former 19th century, Iron Masters estate that had fallen into dereliction, comprising around 4 acres of land, delipidated greenhouses and cold frames, and a grade 2 listed building, situated between the River Stour and the Stourbridge Canal, a short walk from Stourbridge town centre.
Riverside House is a multitude of projects within projects, with the overarching aim to develop a place that inspires and encourages health and wellbeing in its broadest form, encompassing crafts, food, heritage, ecology and arts.
It is transforming into a haven for people to explore the natural environment, engaging through stewardship of the wildlife and ecology, developing sustainable off grid spaces; repurposed shipping container cafe/community rooms, with solar power, wood burner and LPG. A water bore hole, and an oak framed roundhouse. The grade 2 listed building is part of a long-term project.
Initially, we have focused provision for people with learning disabilities and autism. Alongside our dedicated volunteers/ staff, they have worked tirelessly developing the land, constructing the new builds and care-taking the wildlife and ecology.
In 2020 we expanded our provision, developing a suite of workshops for people referred to us via Integrated Plus, the local social prescribing service. The first cohort was a success with beautiful pieces of blacksmith hooks, wooden spoons and copper jewellery created by those who joined us. People told us they have enjoyed having something positive to look forward to during lockdown, which had been particularly challenging for these groups.
