Job Title:
Senior Social Worker / Parenting Apart Consultant
The Parenting Apart Programme (PAP) is a strengths-based, child development and attachment focused, semi-structured approach designed to support parents and children in the midst of conflict, separation and divorce. Inter-parental conflict within families can vary in severity and impact upon children of all ages in a multitude of ways. Hostile exchanges between parents and exposure to conflicted behaviours have many negative impacts on the current and future wellbeing of a child. Separation or divorce can places a huge strain on relationships and can have significant consequences for all parties. PAP is a stand-alone evidence based intervention, specifically designed to work with parents or carers when communication has broken down and conflict has become destructive, bringing unmanageable levels of distress.
The unique structure of the PAP has been created to centrally focus the minds of parents on the psychological needs of their children. It achieves this through a strengths based, attachment-focused commitment, prioritising the of the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children impacted by parental separation and divorce.
PAP is designed to support parents to refocus on the needs of their child/ren and work together towards more positive communications. This involves individual meeting with each parent or carer to establish trust and develop a positive approach. Providing it is safe to continue, parents/carers attend joint meetings to support them to begin communicating together in a supportive environment and to form a respectful parent working relationship. This results in the formulation of a Parent Working Agreement (PWA) which both parents commit to abide by and can be presented to Court to form their Childcare Arrangement Order. Through this support PAP aims to strengthen parents or carers ability to problem solve and make decisions in the best interests of their children, without the need for ongoing support and intervention.
The programme can be delivered as an:
Early intervention approach
Within a court directed plan
As part of a Child in Need or Child Protection Plan
Special Guardianship, Foster Carer or Adoption
PAP is delivered virtually or face to face with parents or carers who have Parental Responsibility of the child in their care.
