16 October 2025. As part of Dudley History Festival we welcome Judith Davies with her talk titled Retail Revolutionaries? The struggle for power and influence in mid-nineteenth century Dudley.
Dudley was controlled by landowners, industrialists and Anglican clergymen in the eighteenth century, and those in power wanted to keep it that way. However, Britain faced pressures for change and parliamentary reform. In Dudley, nonconformists led the demand for change and a share in power. Many of their leaders were shopkeepers of whom Samuel Cook is the best remembered but most of the others, such as Thomas Hill, Thomas Lester, the Twamleys and the Wood family, are almost entirely forgotten. Join us as we look at the personalities and events which shaped this period in time.
