Course: Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.
Awarding Body: Signature (The UK’s leading awarding body for sign language qualifications).
Delivery: Live online interactive sessions via Zoom.
Prerequisite: None (Perfect for absolute beginners).

Day: Monday - Via Zoom
Time: 19.00-21.00.
Duration: 33 weeks.
What the Course Covers
This introductory Signature qualification builds your confidence to communicate using simple, everyday language. It is ideal for anyone looking to learn a new skill, connect with Deaf family or friends, or start a career working with Deaf adults and children.
The curriculum transitions you from complete beginner to a confident signer across three core modules:
Unit BSL101 – Introduction to BSL
Meeting People: Master formal and informal greetings, introductions, and basic personal background.
Numbers & Time: Count accurately, sign ages, use calendar dates, and tell the time.
Weather & Transport: Describe daily weather conditions and discuss different methods of travel.
Unit BSL102 – Conversational Skills
People and Animals: Describe family members, physical appearances, personality traits, and pets.
Interests and Hobbies: Talk about your favourite sports, leisure activities, food, drink, and entertainment.
Home and Environment: Describe your living space, local area, and objects around the home.
Unit BSL103 – BSL at School, College, or Work
Daily Routines: Detail your everyday schedules, work life, or educational environment.
Directions and Spatial Awareness: Give and follow clear directions, map routes, and physical instructions using signing space.
Workplace Communication: Learn common professional terminology, workplace objects, and industry-specific vocabulary.
Official Signature Exam Format
To achieve your full qualification, you will complete three bite-sized practical assessments. These exams are spaced out across the course, so you never have to sit one massive final test. All examination fees are fully included in your course price.
1. Unit BSL101 Exam (Internally Assessed)
Format: A brief, relaxed, 1-to-1 conversation with your regular class tutor.
What is tested: Your ability to greet the tutor, fingerspell your own name, swap basic personal details, and answer simple questions about numbers or the weather.
Marking: Graded directly by your teacher to give you a stress-free introduction to language assessment.
2. Unit BSL102 Exam (Externally Assessed)
Format: A 4 to 5-minute recorded 1-to-1 conversation with your tutor.
What is tested: You will pick one topic title from a choice of three supplied by Signature (such as My Pet or My Favourite Interest) and chat naturally about it.
Marking: The session is recorded and sent over to an external Signature examiner for official grading.
3. Unit BSL103 Exam (Externally Assessed)
Format: A 4 to 5-minute recorded 1-to-1 conversation with your tutor.
What is tested: A fluid conversation focusing specifically on everyday life, work, routines, or giving and taking instructions and directions.
Marking: Just like BSL102, this is filmed and submitted to Signature assessors to ensure independent, national standardization.

Take part in simple, everyday face-to-face conversations.
Give and follow simple directions, instructions, and descriptions.

Total Fee: £660.00 (Paid in full prior to the course start date).
Option 2: Pay per Unit (Termly)
Unit BSL101: £220.00 (Paid before Term 1 starts)
Unit BSL102: £220.00 (Paid before Term 2 starts)
Unit BSL103: £220.00 (Paid before Term 3 starts).
Important: Payment plans must be formally agreed and set up before the course begins. Students who withdraw after the first two weeks remain liable for the full balance.
