Brierley Hill Library - Dudley History Festival: Rob Broadbent

Hobbies and Interests

23 October 2025. As part of Dudley History Festival we welcome Rob Waldren with his talk titled Walking in Satan’s Footsteps; The Blackbrook Valley and Merry Hill (Walking Talk).

The Blackbrook Valley and Merry Hill was an area once covered with iron works, brick works, clay pits and collieries all serviced by an impressive network of canals. A local poet wrote of it “When Satan stood on Brierley Hill, and far around it gazed, he said, ‘I never more shall feel, at Hell’s fierce flames amazed” Today the Blackbrook Valley and Merry Hill's remarkable industrial history is mostly hidden by one of the largest urban nature reserves in the UK and a massive shopping and office complex. During the talk I take an audience along the route of a walk around the area pointing out places of interest, illustrating how the landscape has changed and highlighting some of the industries and companies the locality is famous for.
